The Western Painted Turtle will come out to sun itself as soon as the day heats up.

Little information is available on turtle sign in the tracking guides. One exception is Olaus Murie's 1954 classic book in the Peterson Field Guide Series, Field Guide to Animal Tracks. So far I only have one set of tracks.

A large painted turtle made these tracks in the shallow, soft mud of a pond next to the Henry's Fork of the Snake River near Rexburg, Idaho. The trail width is about 6 inches
